Vermont Hospital Quality Profiles

VPQHC created profiles on Vermont hospital participation in VPQHC statewide quality improvement initiatives, as well as a small subset of publicly-available quality metrics by hospital. The following definitions support the profiles.

Definitions:

Standardized Infection Ratio (SIR): the observed number of new infections in a hospital patient population compared to what might be expected based on the infection occurrence in a national patient population during a given time. A SIR of 1.0 indicates the number of actual infections is the same as or similar to the predicted number

Risk-Standardized Mortality Rate (RSMR): the observed percentage of admissions that result in death from any cause within 30 days from the date of admission for patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of a specific condition compared to what might be expected based on the death rate in a national patient population during a given time. The rate considers the patient’s risk factors (e.g., age, other illnesses) and the hospital's unique quality of care effect to enable comparison between the hospital and national rates.

Risk-Standardized Readmission Rate (RSRR): the observed percentage of admissions that result in an unplanned readmission from any cause within 30 days after discharge compared to what might be expected based on the readmission rate in a national patient population during a given time. The rate considers the hospital’s patient case mix and unique quality of care effect on readmission to enable comparison between the hospital and national rates.
