Expanding Access to Peer Review Across Vermont’s Healthcare Continuum
The VPQHC Peer Review Network was originally developed to support all Vermont hospitals by facilitating access to structured, confidential peer reviews, particularly when internal capacity or specialty expertise was limited.
The network connected hospitals with qualified external reviewers to examine complex or unexpected clinical cases, identify system-level factors, and support continuous improvement in care quality.
VPQHC is now working toward developing the next phase of the Peer Review Network, expanding its reach to include providers across the continuum of care, such as mental health agencies, primary care, and long-term care organizations. A continued focus remains on supporting small and rural providers in accessing high-quality peer review resources.
Informed by statewide feedback and a recent gap analysis, this next phase will offer a more inclusive, modernized model that fosters non-punitive learning, transparency, and shared accountability, advancing safe, high-quality care across Vermont’s healthcare system.
