Supporting Accurate, Transparent Infection Reporting in Vermont Hospitals
The Vermont Program for Quality in Health Care (VPQHC) supports statewide efforts to ensure accurate and transparent reporting of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Through a contract with the Vermont Department of Health (VDH), VPQHC provides validated surgical site infection (SSI) data for public reporting on the Vermont Hospital Report Card, a resource that helps Vermonters understand the quality and safety of care at their local hospitals.
This work currently focuses on SSIs related to hip and knee replacement procedures. Hospitals submit data to the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), and VPQHC works closely with them to review and validate the information before sharing it with VDH. Our goal is to ensure that data are complete, accurate, and comparable across facilities.
VPQHC provides technical assistance, training, and consultation to hospitals throughout the process. We help clarify reporting requirements, identify discrepancies, and promote consistent interpretation of national standards. This supports both public transparency and internal hospital improvement efforts.
